It seems whenever Apple comes up with a new iProduct of some sort – like the iPhone – someone is quick to jump on a trademark lawsuit. When the company introduced iAds earlier this year for advertising within iOS applications, it looks like it was hit with a trademark lawsuit for the term.
CNET says:
Innovate Media had used the term since 2006 and was granted two trademarks (3,515,183 and 3,515,184) for “iAds” in October 2008.
Apple may have settled the suit under the radar as we’re only hearing about the settlement now, but it apparently took place back in July. Apparently, the figures were nothing to sneeze at, either:
That likely would have been the last of it but on Thursday, Consor, a company that helps evaluate intellectual property, posted a release to the Web titled “Consor Intellectual Asset Management Secures Success for Four Clients.”
In a teaser line under the headline, the company wrote: “iAds, a 7-figure settlement from Apple Computer in a trademark infringement case.”
Youch! No worries, though, as Apple has upwards of $50 billion in the bank.
