YouTube CEO Chad Hurley hands over the reigns

Just over five years ago, Chad Hurley and a two other friends created YouTube. Since then, it has been acquired by Google in late October 2006 for $1.65 billion. Today, the site serves up nearly 2 billion videos a day, and word is that Hurley has decided to step down from his role as CEO.

Salar Kamangar is the new CEO, but Hurley will still be around while he focuses his energy on other projects. While the company is clearly in good and capable hands, it’s a little sad to see Hurley go.

Forbes is reporting:

Google dispatched one of its longtime employees, Salar Kamangar, to help Hurley steer YouTube in 2008. That move signaled Google’s resolve to start making more money off its 2006 acquisition of YouTube for $1.76 billion. Kamangar’s expertise is in online advertising.

Kamangar now officially assumes the CEO’s role while Hurley, 33, remains available as a part-time adviser.

Hurley will be working on a men’s clothing line called Hlaska — it’s a weird name, but um, “Hurley” is already taken.
