Rumor: Verizon iPhone causes carrier to boost staff members

Whether you believe a Verizon iPhone or not, the world seems to believe one is coming. As a result, Verizon is rumored to be prepping staff and getting ready for a major launch. If Big Red actually manages to have its own CDMA version of the Apple smartphone, there will be hoards of newcomers picking up the device on the nation’s most reliable network.

In addition to the Wall Street Journal and New York Times recently confirming the coming of a Verizon iPhone, new rumors suggest that the carrier is adding more personnel to its call centers. Presumably this rise in hiring is to support the tons of calls and inquiries that a popular new device will bring. No other handset would require this kind of internal beef-up, so it’s easy to assume that it’s all Apple, baby.

AppleInsider is reporting a pretty convincing case:

Customer service call center staffing companies Teleperformance and Ryla are looking for thousands of customer service representatives to field calls for a “major wireless cell phone service retailer,” according to a report by CNET. Posts to the Careerbuilder website as well as the companies’ own websites reveal that the positions will be dedicated to “either a wireless, cell phone, or communications company,” with additional positions offering technical support for “personal computers and portable devices like MP3 players and smartphones.”

One Teleperformance call center in Augusta, Georgia, will double its employees through the hiring campaign. “It is for a major wireless company that we have secured a new line of business, one of our existing clients,” Marcie Ballard, vice president of recruiting for Teleperformance, told the Augusta Chronicle, although she declined to say which provider.

One thing I know for sure is that more than half my friends, who absolutely abhor AT&T, will be migrating over to Verizon if it picks up the new iPhone.

Moreover, this could really solidify Apple’s charge against Google’s Android operating system, which is available on a number of handsets across every major carrier in the United States. Android numbers, or volume, is the only reason why it’s going to trump Apple and its precious smartphone. For the love all things holy, let the iPhone land on the nation’s number one carrier.
