Marijuana Web Names Grabbed for Hopeful Get-Rich-Quick Schemes

Marijuana is inching closer to becoming legalized, and would-be entrepreneurs are snapping up web domains related to the drug in hopes that they’ll be able to cash in if the herb is just as accessible as acetaminophen.

One police officer named Kevin Faler hopes to make some big bucks on a huge number of marijuana-related domain names such as icecreammarijuana.com and marijuanapastry.com.

I once told a friend, “You know how people always say they’d play the stock market if they could ever travel into the past? Not me. I’d buy up all the huge domain names.”

The New York Times says:

All of this has been given a fresh burst of intensity by next week’s vote on Proposition 19, the California ballot measure that would legalize up to an ounce of the drug for recreational use. Fourteen states have already legalized medical marijuana.

“Marijuana domain name values will fly off the charts once Prop 19 passes,” said Mr. Faler, 49. “I’m hoping to make enough money to buy a condo in Morocco. That’s how big it’s going to be.”

For more than just the sake of these folks getting wildly rich, I’m hoping the law passes. It’s not that I smoke marijuana, but the laws prohibiting its use and sale are really just not founded in solid logic.

We’ll see what happens, but it seems like the legalization of marijuana will do nothing but help several parties with money — whether its from taxes on the drug or those who find some other legitimate way to earn a buck from it, like buying up domains.
